The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair at The Marquee, Battersea Park, London SW11 continues to go from strength to strength, having just experienced its busiest fair to date (in January). The Fair was awash with leading interior decorators looking to buy the best in unusual period design (see Notes overleaf).

The organisers are delighted to announce that the Spring Fair Foyer will feature a colourful display and selling exhibition of textiles by Fine Cell Work, a Registered Charity that teaches needlework to prison inmates and sells their products on their behalf. Many well-known designers, such as Kaffe Fassett, Melissa Wyndham, Sandy Jones and Nina Campbell are associated with the charity, and the Foyer display will include items made to designs created by them exclusively for Fine Cell Work. A survey conducted by the China Cotton Textile Association (CCTA) shows that 49.2 per cent of textile enterprises planned to turn to other business. Their investment in textile production is expected to drop by 15.5 per cent this year, as producers received pressure from Renminbi appreciation, export drawback policy adjustment, trade friction and the rising costs on labor force. The research conducted in March found that the industry had sunk into a dire state, with over two-thirds of the businesses making a mere 0.62% profit margin. It also suggested that if the ill-performing businesses went under, the livelihoods of 15 million workers would be in question.

China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) conducted the research in six provinces – namely Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Guangdong, Fujian and Hebei – which together produced 85% of China’s textile exports. (more…)

According to CNTAC’s latest industry survey, profit margins averaged at 3.9 percent among textile companies last year. Two thirds of the companies surveyed reported an average profit margins of 0.62 percent.

The survey, conducted by CNTAC in early March covered textile companies in six provinces including Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong, which accounted for 85 percent of China’s textile exports. (more…)

What the government has in mind at present is 90 days’ wages as compensation. The government expects the move to give a big boost to employment, and to make several sectors of Indian industry globally competitive. The increase was largely caused by higher selling prices, particularly for petroleum and chemical products. Improved sales accounted for the remainder of the increase.

The company said the authorization adds to the company’s current 6 million-share authorization. Timberland said about 1 million shares remained on that authorization at the end of 2007.

As of Feb. 22, Timberland had 48.4 million shares outstanding.

Timberland shares fell 45 cents, or 3.2 percent, to close at $13.76.

The Beaverton, Ore.-based company said Monday it is launching a line of footwear, apparel and equipment focused on young athletes, including a partnership with a specialty company called Sparq Training.

“I think over the last couple of years, there is a real transformation in training,” said Joaquin Hidalgo, vice president of global marketing for the Nike brand. “We are seeing kids focus earlier on one or two sports and really looking for an edge in how to be better in their chosen sports.”

The idea of using one shoe to train for multiple sports took off in the 1980s with bulky cross-training shoes that ultimately fell out of fashion and have since sold at low levels. (more…)
